Safety House

The Camelot Rise Safety House Committee became operational in November 1988, and is run by a committee of parents with a teacher representative.

This highly valuable program is introduced to students early in the Prep year and is reinforced regularly. Safety House signs are displayed on letterboxes of homes in the neighbourhood and Prep students are taken on a walk of the local area to be made aware of these homes.  Any house or premises displaying this friendly yellow sign is a place where children can go if they feel concerned about being followed or bothered by somebody on their way to and from school.  Home owners displaying the Safety House sign have been screened and have undergone Police checks.

The basic aims of the Safety House Program are to:

  • provide community assistance to children while travelling to and from school, should they feel unsafe.
  • provide a means for children to get help as quickly as possible by running to a safe place (a Safety House) and a helpful and responsible person in that house.
  • deter undesirable people from entering local areas through the prominent display of Safety House signs.
  • educate the wider community about the dangers facing children while commuting to school.

The role of the Safety Householder is to comfort the child and contact the police.

The designated Safety Houses are occupied by people who have been interviewed by members if the committee and who are normally at home at the time children would be in transit to and from school.  It is not essential that a Safety House occupier be at home all the time, so those parents with part-time employment need not feel excluded from becoming a Safety House.  You must also consent to having your personal details checked against police records.  If you are interested in becoming a Safety Householder or have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the school or the local safety house representative.
