The Senior School

The concept of the Learning Centre was established in 1976 when Camelot Rise was first opened. The Learning Centre allows for the flexible use of staff, teaching spaces and resources. The Senior Learning Centre breaks down the barriers between the Year 5 and Year 6 levels and generally provides for an enriched program for all students.

One of the advantages enjoyed by the centre is the ability to group students. This can be done in a variety of ways including mixed ability, ability, age and social groupings. Flexible grouping styles can mean:

  • Catering for the needs of the individual child
  • Increased opportunity for social interaction
  • Providing exposure to different teachers, teaching styles and learning environments
  • Encouraging greater use of initiative
  • Encouraging students to have more responsibility for their own learning

Curriculum

An integrated approach has enabled an effective coverage of all the key learning areas.  There is an emphasis on providing a differentiated curriculum across all key learning areas to cater for the individual needs of students. This is most clearly evidenced by our Vertical Mathematics Program that is run in conjunction with Children of High Intellectual Potential (CHIP) Programs.

Extension activities ate incorporated in to the core studies and many opportunities are provided for participation in external competitions, e.g.:

  • University of  N.S.W. - Australian School Science, Mathematics, Computer and English Competitions
  • Mathematics Olympiad
  • Chess Tournaments
  • Alliance Français de Melbourne - Berthe Mouchette Competition
  • National Australia Bank - French Poetry Competition
  • Tournament of the Minds
  • RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge
  • Epilepsy Foundation Trivia Challenge

The Senior Learning Centre provides diversity and challenge in the curriculum which we believe is essential for students in the upper years of Primary School.

Buddy Program

The "Buddy" program develops and promotes social skills between Prep and Year 6 students. The program establishes a link between an incoming Prep child and a Year 6 student to aid the Prep's transition from Pre-school to school and to promote the responsibilities given to the Year 6 students.

Community Involvement Program

The Community Involvement Program provides our students with an opportunity to form  links with members of the wider community such as Pre-school Centres and Aged care facilities. The students gain a greater understanding of good citizenship and learn how to communicate in a different environment.

Student Welfare

Student Welfare at Camelot Rise is a priority. Programs have been introduced to Year 5 and Year 6 to develop skills in cooperative group participation, managing peer pressure and assertive behaviour. Students aim to develop positive thinking skills and resilience. The programs bring many benefits to our students and promotes a positive and caring school culture.

Overseas Study Tour

Camelot Rise hosts an overseas study tour every second year to New Caledonia as part of our French program in which only students from the Senior Leering Centre are invited to participate. The tour enables students to use the language skills they have developed since Prep and to be immersed in a French culture.

Communication and Parental Participation

Camelot Rise continues its commitment to open communication with parents through the use of school diaries. The diaries assist teachers in maintaining contact with parents and encourage students in developing time management skills.
