About Wakakirri
Camelot Rise entered the Story–Dance section of Wakakirri National Story Festival this year. Story-Dance is about telling stories; it is not just a dance routine. Each story must use creative movements to show a clear ‘beginning, middle and end’. Trials are held over a week and 14 schools in each division are then chosen to proceed on to the Victorian finals.
At Camelot Rise Primary School three staff members (Kerryn Wardle, Cameron Stillman and Illana Tusia) wrote a creative and vibrant dance story about a fictional student’s struggle with obesity and poor lifestyle. A young a boy chooses to sit and play computer games whilst continuously eating junk food. His friends try to tempt him to join them in various fun activities and eventually he joins in and finally becomes a much healthier, happier and more active person.
The students in the dance group quickly grasped the important message that the story line was trying to portray and immersed themselves in the characters they were given. Fat boy Robbie had to think fat thoughts so that he moved in a sluggish, slow manner, whilst the team of grim reapers had to cast a shadow of gloom with a few simple movements and actions. The students enthusiastically embraced the need for many lunchtime rehearsals and all helped find the appropriate recycled materials needed for the props.
The students (and the teachers) are very excited about performing in the finals at Vodafone area on the 8th September and we wish them every success.
